Carol Sahley

Senior Director of Democracy League Planning

When I was a child, my family often visited Peru. I was always struck by the stark differences between the U.S. and Peru, and I wanted to understand why some governments serve their people more effectively than others. I went on to study political science, earning a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics.

For over two decades, I worked to advance democracy worldwide at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). I also served as Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council at the White House. I have worked in more than thirty countries, promoting free and fair elections, civic engagement, and peacebuilding.

I am grateful for the opportunity to work on civic engagement in my own backyard. We are not all that different from one another. Democracy requires us to come together and choose to construct genuinely democratic processes. Let's get it done.
