Unify America Privacy Policy

Protecting your personal information is very important to us, and we will only use it in connection with Unify America, the pursuit of our mission, and the public interest.

In short, our policy is to:

Collect personal information from you so that we can understand what you’re interested in, connect you with other Unify America participants, communicate with you regarding opportunities with Unify America, and provide you with Unify America services;
Never sell your personal information to third parties under any circumstances;
Only share your personal information with third parties when Unify America is partnering with them to further Unify America’s mission or serve the public interest; and
Treat your personal information as confidential, and insist that any vendors or partners in our mission with whom we share your information treat it as confidential as well.

This Privacy Policy applies to Unify America. It also applies to unifyamerica.org as well as sites, apps, and/or other technology we use (collectively, “Software”) to provide our services and to perform other functions in pursuit of Unify America’s mission. This policy explains our data collection and usage practices. By using any Software, you consent to the data collection and usage practices described in this policy.

Unify-Related Activities

Unify-Related Activities include:

Registering to receive updates from Unify America
Registering for an account
Sending us an email message or other communication
Registering for and completing a Unify America program (such as the Unify Challenge or Deep Dive)
Responding to other surveys
Submitting your credit card or other payment information when donating to Unify America or paying for services or merchandise
Applying for a job or volunteer position at Unify America
Participating in Unify America events including community building, learning, volunteering, fundraising and other types of activities
Participating in activities and/or receiving information from third parties that are mission-aligned with Unify America
Connecting with other Unify America participants
Learning about Unify America’s work and philosophy
Participating in or being informed of other activities related to Unify America and/or our mission

Collection of your Personal Information

You may be required to provide certain personal information to us when you elect to engage in Unify-Related Activities. This information may include your name, date of birth, gender, race/ethnicity, home address, email address, phone number, IP address, your interests, video and audio of you, and/or demographic information.

Video and Audio Recordings

Unify America may collect video and audio recordings of you as part of Unify-Related Activities (for example, a recorded conversation during the Unify Challenge). Unify America does not currently use this video or audio to derive a biometric identifier or biometric information — such as a scan of your face or voice geometry — for purposes of identifying you, and this recorded content is not treated as biometric data under this Policy. If that changes, we will provide additional notice, update this Privacy Policy, and obtain any additional consent required by applicable law, such as the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, before doing so.

Use of your Personal Information

Unify America and Software collect and use your personal information to: (i) operate its website(s) and apps; (ii) communicate with you about Unify-Related Activities; (iii) generate skills reports or comparable analyses; and (iv) analyze, plan, and perform functions related to Unify America’s mission.

Sharing Information with Third Parties

Unify America will not sell, rent, or lease your personal information to third parties for commercial purposes or any purposes other than those defined in this Privacy Policy.

If you register for a Unify America program such as the Unify Challenge or Deep Dive, Unify America may share some of your personally identifiable information with individuals with whom you are matched for the purposes of scheduling or following up on Unify-Related Activities.

Unify America may, from time to time, use trusted third party service providers to contact you on our behalf about Unify-Related Activities. In those cases, your personally identifiable information (specifically: e-mail, name, address, telephone number) may be transferred to the third party. Unify America may share data with trusted partners or service providers to help perform statistical analysis, send you email or postal mail, provide user, volunteer or participant support, or other functions that support Unify America’s efforts. All such third parties are prohibited from using your personal information except to provide services to Unify America, and they are required to maintain the confidentiality of your information. If we terminate our relationship with that third party, we will request them to delete all information you have provided to us, however, you acknowledge and accept that (a) they may be required by law or court order to maintain your information, (b) we may not be able to definitively confirm that they have deleted your information, and (c) you may have separately provided information to them directly which has been tied to your information provided by us, over which we will not have control.

Unify America may also provide data we’ve collected from you and other volunteers and participants with Unify America, stripped of personally identifiable information, to be used by scholars, journalists, and/or researchers for purposes of research and/or publishing consistent with the mission of Unify America, and in a way that adheres to applicable data protection and research ethics laws.

Unify America may disclose your personal information, without notice, if required to do so by law or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to: (a) conform to the edicts of the law or comply with legal process(es) served on Unify; (b) protect and defend the rights or property of Unify America; and/or (c) act under exigent circumstances to protect the personal safety of Unify America employees, vendors, partners, volunteers and participants, or the public.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Unify America may use artificial intelligence ("AI") technology, provided by a third-party AI vendor (currently Anthropic), to support certain Unify-Related Activities, such as facilitating conversations, analyzing survey responses, generating skills reports or comparable analyses, and summarizing or evaluating participant interactions.

When we use AI in this way:

We do not send your email address to our AI vendor.
We take reasonable steps to remove or de-identify direct personal identifiers (such as your name and email address) from information before it is shared with our AI vendor. Please note, however, that if you share personal information about yourself within the substance of a conversation, survey response, or chat transcript, that information may still be included in what is shared with our AI vendor. We cannot guarantee the removal of every detail you choose to share in the course of a free-form conversation or other interaction.
Our AI vendor has represented to us that it will not use the information we share with it to train its own AI models.
Our AI vendor is prohibited from using your information for any purpose other than providing services to Unify America, consistent with the "Sharing Information with Third Parties" section above.
Where information relates to a student accessing the Software through a Higher Ed Group License, our agreement with our AI vendor requires the vendor to handle that information consistent with FERPA and our agreement with the applicable institution.

Use of Cookies

Software may use “cookies” to personalize your online experience with us. A cookie is a text file that is placed on your local drive when you visit a web page. Cookies cannot be used to run programs or deliver viruses to your computer. Cookies are uniquely assigned to you, and can only be read by a web server in the domain that issued the cookie to you.

One of the primary purposes of cookies is to allow a website to know what you’ve done on the website previously and, upon your return, to automatically personalize the site to make it easier for you to use, and hopefully, make it more helpful to you. Unify America may keep track of and analyze: (i) the websites and pages you visit and actions you take on Software and (ii) Unify-Related Activities in which you participate, in order to improve Unify America’s efforts to achieve our mission. Information about your computer hardware and software may be automatically collected by Software. This information can include: your IP address, browser type, domain names, access times, referring website addresses and other data that can be automatically collected. This information is used to maintain and improve the quality and effectiveness of Software and Unify America’s operations in pursuit of our mission.

You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. If you choose to decline cookies, you may not be able to benefit from the automatic personalization of the Software experience online.

Software may contain links to other 3rd party sites. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of such other sites. We encourage you to be aware when you leave our site and to read the privacy statements of any other site that collects personally identifiable information.

Security of your Personal Information

Unify America secures your personal information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. Software uses the following methods for this purpose:

We encrypt your data according to industry standards.

When personal information (such as a credit card number) is transmitted to other websites, it is protected through the use of encryption, such as the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol.

We strive to take appropriate security measures to protect against unauthorized access to or alteration of your personal information. Unfortunately, no data transmission over the Internet or any network can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, while we strive to protect your personal information, you acknowledge that: (a) there are security and privacy limitations inherent to the Internet that are beyond our control; and (b) security, integrity, and privacy of any and all information and data exchanged between you and us cannot be guaranteed.

Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights regarding your personal information:

Right to know or access the personal information we have collected about you;
Right to correct inaccurate personal information;
Right to delete your personal information;
Right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information, or its use for targeted advertising;
Right to limit the use of sensitive personal information (such as race/ethnicity) to purposes necessary to provide the services you have requested;
Right not to be discriminated or retaliated against for exercising any of these rights; and
Right to appeal a denial of a request, as described below.

Please note that we may not comply with requests to delete your personal information if it is necessary to:

Continue to communicate with you because you wish to maintain your relationship with Unify America, use Software and/or participate in Unify-Related Activities;
Complete a transaction for which the personal information is required, fulfill the terms of a written warranty or product recall conducted in accordance with federal law, provide a good or service requested by you, or reasonably anticipated within the context of our ongoing relationship with you, or otherwise perform a contract between you and us;
Detect security incidents, protect against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent, or illegal activity; or prosecute those responsible for that activity;
Debug to identify and repair errors that impair existing intended functionality;
Complete research when our deletion of the information may complicate or impair the achievement of such research;
Please note that we would not be required to fulfill your request under certain circumstances. These may include instances where we must retain or restrict access to your personal information in order to comply with litigation or legal obligations.

Please note, when you submit a request to exercise your right to deletion, we are required to verify that you are who you say you are. We may require additional information to verify your identity.

If we deny your request in whole or in part, you may appeal our decision by contacting us at info@unifyamerica.org. We will respond to your appeal within 45 days.

Children Under Thirteen

Unify America and Software do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under the age of thirteen. If you are under the age of thirteen, you may not use the Software.

Higher Education Institution Partnerships

Some participants access Software through a Higher Ed Group License purchased by their college or university, as described in Unify America's Terms of Service. Where a college or university shares personal information about a student with Unify America under such a license, Unify America uses that information only to provide the licensed services. This applies the same way regardless of a student's age: the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) treats a student enrolled at a postsecondary institution as an “eligible student” who controls their own education records, regardless of age, so no separate parental consent or notice is required under FERPA on account of a student being under 18.

Opt-Out & Unsubscribe

You may opt-out of receiving any or all communications from Unify America and third-party partners of Unify America by contacting us here: info@unifyamerica.org. It may take up to 60 days to respond to your request.

Changes to this Statement

Unify America reserves the right to change this Privacy Policy from time to time.

We will notify you about significant changes in the way we treat personal information by sending a notice to the primary email address we have on file for you, by placing a prominent notice on our site, and/or by updating this page on unifyamerica.org. Your continued use of Software after such modifications will constitute your: (a) acknowledgement of the modified Privacy Policy; and (b) agreement to abide and be bound by that Policy.
